intro

July 2020, St. John’s, NL

I’ve been involved in Arts and Entertainment since the mid 1970’s. I moved away from St. John’s back in 1985 and returned in the summer of 2021.

For the past 30 years I have operated independently through my company Visual Records Limited, which is mainly in the business of offering my services and supporting or developing my creative ventures. In terms of the business operations, I’ve always chosen to stay away from owning, buying, selling or renting gear or dealing with sales, marketing and other such matters. The main reason for this is to keep my focus on creative matters (and also logistic matters, since they impact creative).

There have been many temptations to expand the business model but so far I’m happy and proud to have succeeded solely on the value of my services. Fortunately, having a good reputation and a respectable circle of good friends & clients (and perhaps even some good karma) has looked after any need to go out and try to sell myself … which is to say, I have not developed skills in this area. With that said, I’ve been on the move a lot in the past 10 years and as a result of multiple relocations and the repeated changes in new life/living situations, I haven’t been as busy. Now, with this last move complete, and with a future focus more on production than services, it’s time to make more of an effort, however humble, on the sales front . . .

I’d much prefer to talk person than write like this so be that as it may. Ultimately, what I am selling are intangibles; my ability, vision and experience. And some ideas. Having largely made my living as a designer, I don’t claim to be the best designer (or best anything for that matter) but I’m a good team player and I’m good at what I do. I can lead when required and I can take direction. My truth is this; I have been a lot of places, done a lot and seen a lot AND to be honest, none of it matters as much to me as what is next.

There is sometimes a lot made of credits and lists. Personally, I’m not into name-dropping and listing professional statistics etc. In my experience working with people all such data is mostly meaningless. While I am very fortunate and grateful for all my experiences, there comes a point when a successful behind-the-scenes professional need not be defined by the names of other artists or productions just because of an affiliation.

So for now suffice it to say that we can leave any of that stuff for conversation fodder … if perchance there’s something else to talk about.

Cheers!
